How we open the vehicle depends on the vehicle. Older cars with vertical lock buttons and simple linkages open with a long-reach tool through a protected gap. Modern vehicles with side-impact bars, shielded linkages and electronic locks usually open through the door lock cylinder using a decoder, or by generating a mechanical key on the spot. On many newer vehicles, forcing a tool into the window channel risks damaging the weather strip or the trim, so we use inflatable wedges and protected tools and we stop if a method is not working cleanly. Almost every vehicle built in the last twenty-five years has an immobilizer. The key carries a small chip, the vehicle checks for that chip when you try to start it, and a key with the right cuts but no chip will turn the ignition and do nothing else. Key origination means making a key when there is nothing to copy. We read the lock, cut the mechanical blade to the vehicle's code, then connect to the diagnostic port and program the chip so the immobilizer accepts the new key. The vehicle must be present, and we need to verify that you are the owner or authorized driver, which we do with identification and registration or proof of ownership. That step protects you as much as anyone.
If you still have one working key, make a second one now. Cloning or programming a spare while a working key exists is faster and cheaper than origination after the last one is lost. Fobs fail in a few ways. The battery dies, which is the easy one. The buttons stop working while the key still starts the car, which is usually the remote circuit and often the fob needs replacing. The fob is lost, which means a new fob programmed to the vehicle and, ideally, the old fob erased so whoever finds it cannot open the car. Proximity fobs for push-button start vehicles add a fourth: the vehicle stops recognizing the fob and asks you to hold it against the start button or a marked spot on the column.

Keys break in two places: the door cylinder and the ignition.
